Psychotherapy   Most people will, at some stage in their life, experience events that cause major distress and/or anxiety.  These events may have occurred way back in childhood or more recently.  Either way, these difficulties have potential to impact on our thoughts and feelings in the here-and-now.

In our first meeting we will discuss your goals for treatment and the type of therapy that is likely to be most effective for you.  We may start by using CBT techniques in order to rapidly reduce distressing emotions and to combat some of the behaviours that are causing difficulties.  For many clients this will be sufficient and enable them to move on with their lives.  Other clients may decide to continue therapy in order to explore the issues that have come up for them in greater depth.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)  CBT is especially useful for treating anxiety, panic disorder, OCD, PTSD and depression.
It is a very popular therapeutic approach due to the fact that it is usually short-term, very focused and it can be hugely effective.  CBT is founded in a scientific approach has been extensively assessed using rigorous research.

CBT is based on the idea that the way we think about situations can affect the way we feel and behave.  These beliefs may be influenced by our past experiences.    For example, if you had a difficult early relationship with your parents or at school you may hold beliefs such as ‘I am unlovable’ or ‘I am not good enough’.  These negative thoughts can impact on your current way of being and contribute to a continuous negative cycle.  CBT can help give insight into these issues and help you find different ways of reacting to these issues.

Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy
As the name suggests, Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy brings together different elements of specific therapies in order to tailor therapy to the client’s individual needs and personal circumstances. The aim is to promote healing and create long-term change.  I have completed extensive training in person-centred, psychoanalytic and existential approaches which all inform my practice.  I am, however, especially drawn, to the Person-Centred, Jungian and Gestalt approaches.  This is primarily because I believe that compassion, creativity and experiential therapies can all give a unique understanding of human behaviour and help facilitate change.
